The Ark of the Covenant: A History and Its Significance
What is the Ark of the Covenant?
The Ark of the Covenant, also known as “the Ark”, is a sacred container that was built by Moses under God’s instruction during the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt around 3000 years ago. The Ark is made out of wood with gold plating, it measures 3 feet nine inches long by 2 feet three inches wide by 2 feet three inches high. The top was adorned with two cherubim figures made out of solid gold facing each other with their wings spread across.
According to biblical accounts, inside this container were kept two tablets containing Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai by God himself which were written on stone tablets. Also placed within this sacred box were Aaron’s rod and manna (bread) from heaven.
The Ark was carried through many battles including Jericho where Joshua led his army against Canaanites spreading fear in their enemies when they saw that God was with them leading them to victory.
Historical Significance
The Ark held great religious significance for ancient Israelites as it served as a physical representation of their covenant (or agreement) with God and his presence among them. They believed it had supernatural powers to protect them in war, give direction in times of trouble, heal sicknesses and diseases, bringing rain or droughts depending on whether they followed God’s commands or not.
In addition to its religious significance for ancient Israelites, some scholars believe it played a significant role in shaping our modern society as well. For example:
- Some scholars believe that the Ten Commandments found in the Ark have had a profound impact on modern legal systems.
- The concept of placing important documents or artifacts in a container to be revered has been passed down through history, from ancient religious texts to modern-day museums and libraries.
Location of the Ark
The exact location of the Ark is not known, as it was lost after the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem in 587 BCE. Some people believe it was taken by Babylonians others believe it may have been hidden in Ethiopia by King Solomon’s son Menelik I.
Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims that they possess the original Ark which they keep in Axum, Ethiopia. They refer to it as “Tabot”, a replica or imitation because according to their beliefs, only one priest can see the ark at any given time and is never allowed out of its enclosure.
Theories and Myths about the Ark
Over time many stories and legends have circulated about the potential power of the Ark. One such myth suggests that whoever possesses it will gain immense power and knowledge while others say whoever opens will meet an untimely death; hence some believed that seeking such a powerful object might bring about unwanted consequences.
Some historians argue that there is no evidence to support these theories, pointing out that numerous cultures actively sought out other valuable religious relics but never expressed interest in finding or possessing the Ark for themselves.
Conclusion
Despite being lost for centuries now, The Ark still holds great significance today It’s a great example of how religion can shape our culture and society over time. While we may not know its current whereabouts or what exactly makes this artifact significant beyond religious lore, we do know that this ancient container is revered by many people around the world who are fascinated by its story.
