The Story of Noah’s Ark: A Symbol of Faith and Salvation

God chooses Noah, a man who “walked with God,” to build an ark that would save him, his family, and two of every kind of animal from drowning in the flood.

Noah follows God’s commandments exactly as they are given to him. He builds an enormous wooden boat using cypress wood and pitch. The ark measures 300 cubits long (450 feet), 50 cubits wide (75 feet), and 30 cubits high (45 feet). He also gathers two animals from each species: male and female, as well as seven pairs of clean animals.

When the flood comes, it lasts for forty days and forty nights. The water covers all mountains on earth until there is nothing but water left. However, because Noah has followed God’s instructions precisely, he and his family survive inside the ark along with all their animal companions.

After many months have passed without any signs of land or rescue, Noah sends out a dove to see if it can find dry land. When it returns with an olive branch in its beak, they know that waters have receded enough for the ark to land on Mount Ararat. Noah and his family, along with all the animals, disembark and offer a sacrifice to God in gratitude for their salvation.
